Clover Heart Coaster - Last Minute St. Pat's Gift?

Connect simple crochet hearts at the center, and voila! You have a set of coaster you can use individually or as a larger piece. You can make them as last minute gifts for St. Patrick’s Day, perhaps?

Simple and quick crochet hearts

It started out as a gift for a friend who invited me to a St. Patrick’s day dinner. I happened to have a skein of green worsted 100 acrylic yarn from another project and thought it can be made into something practical with a St. Pat’s Day theme.

I only had two days to come up for something, and I came across this pattern of crochet hearts by Bella Coco. There are many crochet heart patterns in various sizes available for free, and I liked this one because it’s simple (single crochet stitch only) and sturdy to be useful.

Once you understand the pattern, it will probably take you about 30 – 45 minutes to make one. I don’t crochet very often, so it took a bit for me figure out in the beginning, but her video tutorial definitely helped.

She provides a very clear and detailed pattern description on the page above, and for the ease of U.S. crochet community, I am repeating the pattern below using the U.S. terminologies.

Chain Together with Stitch Marker

I originally started making them as individual coasters and after making five and lining them up, I realized I can fan them out and create a wheel, which sort of looks like a clover. Luckily again, I had a green removable stitch marker to connect them all at the bottom of the hearts (!). If I were smart and planned it all along, I probably incorporated a tiny loop in each heart to make connecting easier, but this also works.

So, if you happen to be thinking of useful crochet gifts, thank Bella Coco and give this a try. You can use pink or red for Valentine’s Day, red for Mother’s Day, red and green for the holidays, etc.

Crochet Instructions

Below was taken from Bella Coco’s Crochet Heart pattern and I made a few adjustments using the U.S. terminologies.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn. I recommend cotton or other machine washable yearns. I happened to have a 100 acrylic yarn by Lion Brand called “Schitt’s Creek” which color Cafe Tropical was perfect for a St. Pat’s Day gift.
  • 5 mm crochet hook – to make it sturdy enough for a coaster, I recommend you use a size smaller hook.
  • Stitch marker – a removable piece, which you can use after you are done to connect the pieces.

Crochet Terminologies

  • Chain(s): ch(s): yarn over and pull through
  • Single Crochet or sc: insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook.
