Connect simple crochet hearts at the center, and voila! You have a set of coaster you can use individually or as a larger piece. You can make them as last minute gifts for St. Patrick’s Day, perhaps?
It started out as a gift for a friend who invited me to a St. Patrick’s day dinner. I happened to have a skein of green worsted 100 acrylic yarn from another project and thought it can be made into something practical with a St. Pat’s Day theme.
I only had two days to come up for something, and I came across this pattern of crochet hearts by Bella Coco. There are many crochet heart patterns in various sizes available for free, and I liked this one because it’s simple (single crochet stitch only) and sturdy to be useful.
Once you understand the pattern, it will probably take you about 30 – 45 minutes to make one. I don’t crochet very often, so it took a bit for me figure out in the beginning, but her video tutorial definitely helped.
She provides a very clear and detailed pattern description on the page above, and for the ease of U.S. crochet community, I am repeating the pattern below using the U.S. terminologies.
I originally started making them as individual coasters and after making five and lining them up, I realized I can fan them out and create a wheel, which sort of looks like a clover. Luckily again, I had a green removable stitch marker to connect them all at the bottom of the hearts (!). If I were smart and planned it all along, I probably incorporated a tiny loop in each heart to make connecting easier, but this also works.
So, if you happen to be thinking of useful crochet gifts, thank Bella Coco and give this a try. You can use pink or red for Valentine’s Day, red for Mother’s Day, red and green for the holidays, etc.
