Instant Glam to a Sweater with Faux Fur Trim

Super quick crochet trim with a faux fur yarn can instantly transform your plain sweater to a unique holiday outfit.

Add an easy & quick festive touch with a faux fur trim

It started with making adjustments to the “No-brainer yoke” cropped sweater. After enjoying it for a couple of years either with a layering piece or a just by itself during fall through early spring, I decided to make it longer like a standard sweater. Then I found faux fur yarns for a another projects, and thought it might be fun to crochet a trim.

After the holiday season, I will probably either just take the trim out or switch over to one with a regular yarn. It’s so easy and quick.

Tips for adding faux fur trim

  • Keep it really simple: it’s quite hard to see sts. you create with faux fur yarns, and if you decided to add a trim with multiple rows, you will likely end up squinting the whole time you are adding rows. So, a single crochet st row is a way to go.
  • Choose high quality faux fur yarn: Before finding the yarn from a Danish company called Hobbii, I tried a yarn from another company which it ended up shedding quite a lot of tiny faux fur bits. Most faux fur yarns are created by binding or sewing super fine, short polyester threads to a thin webbing base, and if the binding is not done properly, more than a fair share of tiny threads will separate from the base.
  • Light bulky faux fur yarn to a DK sweater works best: I found it easiest to add a single crochet st all around with a light bulky yarn (6-10 mm needle w/12-st gauge) to a DK yarn sweater. The weight of the faux fur yarn allows you to create a plush trim with just a single crochet st without stretching the edge sts of the base sweater.

I just got into using faux fur yarns and now that I found its incredibly soft texture and ease of handing, I think I’ll use them for creating scarf, vest, and other simple items. Hope you get to enjoy them.

Instructions for faux fur trim:

  • Material
    • 1/3 skein, or about 10 m of Hobbii Fur Lux off-white
    • H or 5.0 mm crochet hook. I used a smaller size crochet hook than typically used for bulky yarn (6 – 10 mm) because I did not create gaping holes in the base sweater.
  • Instruction – Starting from the back side, add a single crochet st. to each edge st. of the base sweater. Tie the beginning and the end of the yarn tightly and cut them short so that they will blend in with the rest of trim.
